JLSN Donates 200 Books to Davenport Ridge Elementary School Lending Library

Stamford, CT (February 23) – The Junior League of Stamford Norwalk, Inc. (JLSN) recently contributed 200 children’s books to Davenport Ridge Elementary School.

“We are so thrilled to contribute to Davenport Ridge Elementary’s new lending library for their students,” Kerry Safir, President of JLSN, said. “It feeds the very heart of our League’s efforts to bring new reading opportunities to children.”

Created by Davenport Ridge Elementary’s librarian this past fall, the lending library encourages students to take a book or leave a book, sharing new reading material within their school community.

“It’s a different experience to own a book than to borrow a book,” Andrea Cohen, school social worker at Davenport Ridge Elementary, said. “I take my students who would benefit from having their own books to this new addition to our school.”

Over the past year, JLSN has rolled out new initiatives focusing on school readiness and childhood literacy. This winter, JLSN collected new and gently used children’s books to be distributed through their Family Literacy Night programs and at other venues throughout the community.

“The kids have been very excited. Within three minutes, one of my students passed by as I was sorting books, she saw a book about Angry Birds and asked if she could have that one,” Cohen said. “In the first three minutes, these books are already finding new homes.”
